Currently in the private practice of sleep medicine, Dr. Schmidt-Nowara is a past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.  He retired from the University of New Mexico in 1997 with the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine after a full career with the medical faculty in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine.  He established New Mexico’s first accredited sleep laboratory and developed it to a leading position in the clinical care, research, and teaching of sleep disorders.  His publications include work in sleep-disordered breathing, with contributions to sleep apnea-related epidemiology, diagnostic techniques, and treatments with CPAP and oral appliances.  He has been a pioneer in the study of and a spokesperson for the use of oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea.  Dr. Schmidt-Nowara is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Sleep Medicine. 

In Dallas, Dr. Schmidt-Nowara is retired from practice with Sleep Medicine Associates of Texas. He directs the sleep laboratory at Cook Childrens Medical Center in Fort Worth. Other hospital affiliations include Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Baylor Hospital in Plano. He has an appointment at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. He has served as board member of the American Heart Association, Dallas Affiliate. He has been honored with the Pierre Robin Award of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2002 and the Nathaniel Kleitman Award of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2003. He has been named ‘Best Doctor, Sleep Medicine’ by D Magazine 2003-2007; and by Best Doctors in America since 2005. 

In Santa Fe, Dr. Schmidt-Nowara practices sleep medicine at the Southwestern Sleep Center. As medical director he oversees laboratory operations and conducts clinics for consultation 2 weeks a month. He maintains a home in Santa Fe and visits frequently for business and for time with family and friends.
